What Never Changes Print E-mail
Written by Annette Nibley

Q: I have a busy everyday life: job, children, etc., so when you say to return in each moment to thoughts of God, on a practical level, how is that done? A lot of my day is taken up having to think of practical matters, and also what about hobbies (I really enjoy cooking and watching cooking programs), my thoughts often go into them. Just feel a little confused, but felt such resonance with your posts.

A: Yes, I understand. The activities of the world do take our attention completely and hold on pretty tight. But that doesn’t mean that you cannot get in the habit of remembering God at intervals throughout the day, regardless of what you are doing. You may start with just planting the suggestion to yourself to remember to think about God once an hour, on the hour. It doesn’t have to be involved – just a simple acknowledgement and gratitude as you are going about your activities. I find that cooking is a wonderful time for that – chopping the vegetables, stirring the pot, washing the dishes – there are many simple tasks that allow you to stop the normal mental engagement with the outside world and simply turn within and acknowledge what you are, what this is, what the Presence of God feels like, and how perfect your life is because of that.

You’ll forget a lot at first, of course, but as you begin to do that at intervals throughout the day, you may notice that you love those moments so much, and that they seem so much “realer” to you than anything else, that you increase the frequency. The inner world is magnetic and will call you to it, and you won’t be able to resist.

It is not necessary to set aside a time for meditating, although that can be a nice time away from distractions. I always wonder, if people meditate once a day, what are they doing the rest of the day? I don’t want to forget God all day and only remember Him for my twenty minutes of sitting. My whole life is devoted to the remembrance of God. What else is there?

Of course there are many times I’ll find that hours have gone by and I’ve been wrapped up in the drama. But as easily as taking your next breath, it is all wiped clean and there is just this, Presence, pure consciousness, pure beingness. All is completely fresh in each new moment. You are reborn in God’s image in each new moment. It doesn’t matter how many times that is forgotten, or for how long, and it doesn’t matter how egregiously you have behaved. In this moment of remembering, you are pure and whole, in God’s love.

Now that this has been suggested to you, you will probably start having those moments throughout your day when you remember, if this is important to you. God is always here when you call.
